“The family like atmosphere makes you feel both valued and a part of a team.  The way the trainers work so closely with you throughout the year almost guarantees that you will be successful. If you follow the system, put in 100% effort and listen to the experience and guidance you will be a successful trainee”.   Paul Davies - trainee

Why Durham SCITT?

Alan Patel - SUBJECT: Maths

Why Durham SCITT?

At the SCITT they set very high standards for the trainees so that you can achieve your potential, but also provide a network of support to help you reach this. The staff in my placement schools were very supportive, not only my subject mentors but also other members of the departments set aside time to help you develop. Although it was definitely the most challenging and intensive year of my student and working life, it was incredibly rewarding and I felt supported 100% of the way.

“I felt supported 100% of the way”

Lyndsay Batty - SUBJECT: Health and Social Care

Why Durham SCITT?

Durham SCITT was extremely challenging and probably the hardest, but most rewarding, year of my life. I found the training sessions beneficial and they really prepared me for my first placement. I was fully equipped with all of the knowledge I needed to start teaching. The behaviour management sessions and enrichment opportunities were amazing and the experience gained was valuable. SCITT was a fantastic course and I honestly felt that we were more advanced and prepared than students from other training providers. I really enjoyed the course and the support I was given from all staff at Durham SCITT was outstanding.

Why Durham SCITT?

The SCITT prepared me with the knowledge, work rate and the mental tenacity required to be a teacher. It provided me with all the skills required to be successful in my chosen career.  The whole SCITT experience made my NQT year and subsequent years seem an absolute breeze! The absolute perfect preparation for a career in teaching even though it maybe seemed too much at the time!

“The perfect preparation for a career in teaching”

“Teaching is the most interesting job I’ve had!The challenges of teaching are both diverse and rewarding. Durham SCITT prepared me to meet these challenges”

Catherine Bruce - Science

Where are you now?I work at The Meadows Specialist BESD school in Spennymoor. While at The Meadows I have had the opportunity to teach secondary Science, Mathematics, English, Life Skills and PHSE as well as Science at KS2, since the opening of our new primary provision. I am the Year 7 tutor and teach these students within a nurture group model. Within the wider school,I have taken on SEN responsibilities, supporting our SENCO,which has included working with families, carers and external agencies to meet the needs of our pupils.  As a member of the Meadows Governing Body for the past two years, I have worked as part of the Curriculum sub-committee.  I have also enjoyed organising a variety of whole school events including Living Eggs chick-hatching and a whole-school recycling scheme and was awarded a Kick Start Grant from the British Science Association to fund events within school during National Science Week.

What were the strengths of Durham SCITT training? My training year at Durham SCITT provided a fantastic foundation for my teaching career.  The course offers a diverse range of opportunities to develop skills as a reflective practitioner within the classroom and in the larger school community, through sessions with the SCITT team and with experts in a variety of fields including positive behaviour management and working with pupils with EAL.  In addition to SCITT based training,we were also given opportunities to work with a subject specialist from the Institute of Physics, and spend time in specialist schools including Beumont Hill at The Education Village and The Meadows Specialist BESD School.

“SCITT staff get to know each trainee and meet their individual needs”

Why would you recommend Durham SCITT?Teaching is the most interesting job I have had, allowing me to support young people in achievement and learning.  The challenges of teaching are both diverse and rewarding. Durham SCITT prepared me to meet these challenges and I continue to draw on my experience at Durham SCITT as I develop my practice in the workplace.

Why did you choose to train at Durham SCITT?I chose to study with Durham SCITT as they offered Science in a smaller setting. After working in scientific research laboratories for 8 years, I had gained experience and expertise in the scientific workplace and was keen to share this with young people.  Additionally, the smaller cohort size gives trainees more access to trainers and  subject tutors on a daily basis and, in turn, allows SCITT staff to get to know each trainee and meet their individual needs.

Success Stories

“Durham SCITT gave me the training experience that was right for me. I was able to get into the classroom as much as possible, feel supported at all times and was part of a well-structured course run by people who care about teaching as a profession and understand the importance of being a teacher and the responsibility that comes with the job”.

Success Stories

Sophie Fairman - Health and Social Care

My NQT year was a learning curve.  SCITT equipped me with the skills and determination that enabled me to deal with the range of situations that I faced in the classroom.

I began working at Woodham Academy - I was the only Health and Social Care teacher at Greenfield at the time and worked between both schools. Whilst at Woodham I applied for a maternity cover position, teaching PSHE and Careers education. This was a challenging role, working with all staff to raise the profile of the subject. I used my experience of organising events and enrichment for the Health and Social Care Young Apprenticeship programme, to help me organise whole school careers events, year group enrichment activities and special event days. I also organised work experience. I now teach at St Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College. For the last 3 years I have been Subject Leader of Health and Social Care. Since becoming Subject Leader, the numbers of students taking the subject have increased and,as a result, new staff have been appointed.  I love having a larger team in the department.

Experiences at SCITT:I had a number of valuable experiences during my time at the SCITT. I was able to work with a Subject Specialist who helped me to develop my teaching skills as well as my subject knowledge. The subject specific sessions were very useful in sharing ideas and experiences with the other trainees as well as developing strategies for effective teaching.

Taking part in the GPS sessions at SCITT was also a memorable part of my training. The staff at SCITT were always supportive. They were available to help and offer reassurance when necessary - nothing was too much trouble.

The whole SCITT programme was a positive experience. I firmly believe it gave me the confidence and the ability to get to where I am today.

“I am now Subject Leader”

Success Stories

Why was Durham SCITT the right place for you to train? “Without the support, training and guidance I received at Durham SCITT, I don’t feel that I would be in my current role as Subject Leader for Health and Social Care.  I love teaching and Durham SCITT gave me the opportunities to develop my practice and equipped me with the resilience I needed to succeed”
