Training hubs across the North East Fully accredited to award primary and secondary QTS
Welcome to Durham SCITT. It’s the personal attention we give to our trainees which makes this a great place to learn. We pride ourselves on the personal approach. We know there is no such thing as a “typical trainee” so we don’t provide a one-size-fits-all course. With hubs across the North East, there will be a training location to suit you.
We now also offer the Level 6 Teaching Apprenticeship in primary and secondary. Please get in touch for more information.

More reasons to choose Durham SCITT
There are a lot of reasons to choose Durham SCITT. We were reaccredited for the delivery of teacher training leading to QTS by the DfE. Our high-quality curriculum and our relentless focus on preparing trainees for life as a teacher was recognised as excellent practice. We are with you throughout the journey, and we are the ones who award your QTS. There is no middle man or faceless organisation deciding your fate.
Many of our trainees secure employment at their placement school and 96% of trainees get a job by the end of the course. We have a 100% completion rate in a typical year because of the pastoral and wellbeing support we offer. Our PGCE is worth 60 masters credits and is delivered in partnership with Northumbria University. Primary trainees also benefit from our partnership with an English Hub and we work closely with Northern Lights Teaching School Hub to support their ITT provision. We work with over 100 partnership schools to make sure trainees have the best possible start to their journey to become a teacher.
Our story
Durham SCITT started training teachers in 2005. With an initial focus on ‘applied’ courses, School Centered Initial Teach Training was the new ‘hands on’ way to train to be a teacher. Based predominantly in school, trainees could develop their practice in the classroom, not in a lecture theatre. We offered a range of subjects such as Travel and Tourism and IT, as well as applied science. In 2011, the DfE decided to end applied courses and we began training a wider range of secondary subjects including geography and MFL. Durham SCITT then started training primary teachers in 2013
